Situated the heart of Carthew, the museum set in 26 acres of woodland is an ideal family destination. A visit to the Wheal Martyn Museum gives visitors an insight into how the China clay was mined and what it was used for and, as well as a view of how the people lived in the area before. You can have the chance of going through the displays and collection of archives like the different tools, pictures, and other documents from the very beginning of china clay industry in Cornwall.

Various events are also held all throughout the year to promote the park and the history of China clay. This is the museum’s way of providing education to students and the people to learn about Cornwall’s history. To better assist the students learn about the rocks, soil and minerals in the museum, a schools loan box service has been made available where these objects can be loaned out to schools. You may contact the museum curator to avail of this.

The museum grounds provide an ideal place for a lovely walk where you will be surrounded by nature. A children’s playground completes the experience and you can have a picnic, as plenty of tables are available for those who bring their own food. Otherwise, you can sample sumptuous locally-made food from the museum cafeteria. You can avail of guided tours free of charge but you have to make advance booking. This is so that the museum can prepare facilities for hands-on experience for the students.

Admission fee for pre-booked educational parties is £2.50 per student, and £5 for adults. The Wheal Martyn Museum is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the year.
