Of Swashbuckling Smugglers And Treasure Islands

This medieval Cornish village has a colourful history of swashbuckling “smugglers”. The fishermen of yore used to play an entertaining “cat-and-mouse” game with the officers, and regularly snuck in caskets of fine French brandy!

These adventurers were widely admired by the villages and were celebrated as local heroes. The cottages and farms of those days had large callers and hidden dungeons to safeguard their illegal treasures. Some of these cottages are around even today, and maybe you could ask the friendly family who owns it, to allow you a peek. They may even have a bottle from long time ago...you just never know!
Treasure Island, the 1949 Disney movie, was set entirely in this mesmerising village. Portloe has also been the setting for numerous movies, television serials, and photo-shoots, which required a depiction of old world Cornwall. You too can experience a slice of this heady potent magic....
