Minack Theatre Cornwall

theatre | penzance

The theatre is change from the other theatres because the shows are performed in an open air. As the temperature is dependent upon the weather, you should take precaution and come prepared for rain or shine. You could bring rain macs, sun hats and sun cream for a hot day especially if you come for the matinee show.

"Minack" got its name from the Cornish word which means rocky place, and it was built and financed by Rowena Cade who played a big role in making the existence of the Minack theatre possible. The first performance show at the Minack theatre was Shakespeare’s "The Tempest" in 1932. Theatre goers can order hot or cold drinks, light snacks like sandwiches, jacket potatoes, pastries, salads and rolls from any of the two coffee shops.

Theatrical groups also perform at the Minack Theatre. In fact, may famous stars have appeared in Minacs’s stage, including Michael York, Sheridan Morley, John Nettles, Sarah Brightman, Will Self, and Jack Shepherd, to name a few. Minack theatre has continued to operate over the years through the generous help of commercial establishments, performing companies and individuals. The Minack Theatre Society which existed from 1959 to 2000 also contributed a lot to the existence of the theatre.

Performances at the theatre may be cancelled due to extreme weather conditions but it will be broadcast on Radio Cornwall (West 103.9, East 95.2) to let you know of changes. Minack theatre has ample parking for theatre goers and visitors. Disabled parking spaces are available, too. Daytime visitors can bring dogs but they are not admitted to the shows. The theatre is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
