Five Teens And Two Adults Thankful After Rescue

Five teenagers can breathe a sigh of relief after they were rescued from the River Tamar on Friday. The teens had been on a camping trip with the West Devon Explorers at Cotehele Quay in Cornwall before they went out on the water.

Coastguard spokesman Dave Colmer remarked to the BBC News that, “Things would have been easier if they’d contacted us to tell us they were out on the water.”

The weather was not the best weather to be out on the water that night. There was heavy rainfall and winds that reached as much as forty knots.

It is being reported by the Brixham Coastguard that two of the teens went into the water and got to shore after their safety boat that was towing the groups kayaks ran out of fuel in the water. The two teens ran to a house and called for help. However, the adult in the group claims that no one went into the water. The Scout Association is planning an investigation of the incident.

Whether the teens went into the water or not, they must be very thankful that they made it through their ordeal intact. The age of the teenagers ranged between fourteen and eighteen years old.

The cost of the rescue that was required to get these teens out of the water warrants an investigation on the actions of the Scouts. Taking a group out in dangerous conditions in a boat that was not adequately prepared for the journey is something that must be answered for. The rescue effort involved an RAF helicopter, a Ministry of Defence launch and lifeboat crews.

It is not clear from reports whether or not the Coastguard would launch its own investigation of the incident alongside the Scouts Association.
