Monkey Sanctuary - looe

Home to a colony of 14 woolly monkeys, the Monkey Sanctuary has made it possible for the third and fourth generation monkeys of those rescued in the early 1970s to regain their natural social skills and learn to leave just like how they would live in the jungle.

Tourists to the Monkey Sanctuary can watch the keepers teach the monkeys to play in the trees and educate them about their behavior. A visit to the sanctuary is a chance to get a glimpse of the social life of the monkeys in the beautiful conservation gardens which is also home to plants and wildlife.

As an added attraction, a CCTV linked Bat Cave has been added to the Monkey Sanctuary which allows a visitor to glimpse the private lives of its resident horseshoe bats.
Have fun and interact with the monkeys as they wander in the seven grassed areas outside their enclosures and eight indoor rooms and huts customized to fit their needs.

Watch the monkeys get fed bowls of food consisting mostly of salad vegetables. The monkeys at the sanctuary are not given bananas as these contain sugar which is not good for woolly monkeys. The Monkey Sanctuary educates thousands of visitors each year on how the monkeys live in the wilds and in captivity, animal welfare and other issues concerning the woolly and capuchin monkeys.

One stop you should not miss at the Monkey Sanctuary is the Tree Top Café which offers vegetarian meals, snacks and ice cream. The Monkey Sanctuary is open from March 16 to September 30, Sundays to Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission fee is £6 for adults, £3.50 for children aged 5-16 years old, £4.50 for students and senior citizens, and £16.00 for a family of two adults and two children.
