National Seal Sanctuary Gweek
wildlife | helston

Set on the beautiful Helford Estuary in Gweek village, the National Seal Sanctuary is also home to grey seals, common seals, sea lions, ponies, otters and goats. Part of the task of the National Seal Sanctuary is to rescue and return sick, stray or orphaned pups each year. The sanctuary is also home to sea lions and adult seals, so if you want to have close encounters with the marine kind, the National Seal Sanctuary is the place for you.
Visiting the National Seal Sanctuary gives you a chance to go on a fascinating trip to what lies beneath the sea and have a close encounter with the diverse species of sea creatures. The National Seal Sanctuary started in 1958 when the owner, Ken Jones discovered a baby seal washed up on the beach near his home. Ken took care of the seal and that started everything. He ran the rescue center to help rehabilitate seals and birds and he became famous for it. He had no choice but to move to a bigger location and that is where the sanctuary is now.
It has become a refuge not only for seals but for other sea creatures, too. Stoop down and enjoy observing the lives of crabs, gobies and blennies and see how they survive in the harsh elements of their habitat. The facilities at the National Seal Sanctuary include a shop, restaurant, outdoor play area and disabled access. It is open to the public daily throughout the year from 10 a.m. except Christmas Day.
Admission fee to the sanctuary is £10.95 for adults, £7.50 for children 15 years old and below and £8.50 for students with valid school cards.
