History and Brief Guide to Mineshop and Crackington Haven

Mineshop was named in two parts, "Mine" after the two working Zinc Mines, which were located in the Valley and "Shop" after the Blacksmiths Shop now known as The Old Smithy. The Mine was closed in the early forties and the Blacksmiths Shop sometime in the late Fifties.

We moved to Mineshop in 1966 and converted/built the Cottages soon after, before this the Lee family owned the Valley and ran a Market Garden, growing Potatoes, Vegetables, Daffodils, Strawberries etc, on the whole of the South facing side of the valley, all this was before the days of large machinery and was done solely by hand! In the spring the Daffodils which still grow in the Valley are a picture

You can walk to the Beach at Crackington Haven by taking the footpath through the Valley fields and Woodland. Distance is about 1 mile and takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

At the Beach you will find a Pub selling Traditional Ales and Bar Food, two exellent Coffee Shops offering good value Lunches etc and a Beach Gift Shop.

St.Gennys as a Parish consists of 5,500 acres. The most South Western point being Highcliff which is justly named being 730feet high making it the highest cliff in England.

Crackington Haven was mainly used for the Quarrying of Slate, large Vessels would come in and Beach themselves at Mid Tide, load up with Slate taken from the cliffs and on the next High tide sail away. Fishing was done here but only on a small scale, due to sea conditions.

Many Ships have been wrecked along this Stretch of Coastline over the years, it has earned this ryhme: "From Padstow Point to Lundy Light is a Watery Grave by Day or by Night"

A German E Boat on tow to Bristol broke her tow rope and ended up on the Beach next door to Crackington called Tremoutha. Although the Boat was dismantled by Cornish Wreckers her three V20 engines still remain on the beach and can be seen at low tide by walking around the rocks to the next Beach, but be careful not to cut off by the rising Tide!!

Lifeguards operate at the Beach during the Summer Holiday from 10am to 6pm every day. Please take notice of the Flags and Signs.
