Closed in 1927, Bodmin Jail is the last jail in Cornwall but the place is now getting a fair share of tourists with its all weather, family attraction features which includes a bar and restaurant, covered courtyard, with a Civil and Naval Prison which houses a museum.
Bodmin Jail has a sinister past with a record of 55 executions from the time it was built until 1862 but instead of scaring people, this has attracted tourists and ghost-hunters alike.
Bodmin Jail’s attraction lies in the murder, misery and the darkness that envelops the place, marked by the ugly tower jutting out that can be seen from miles around. To be honest, there is nothing romantic about the place.
Be transported to the 17th century when executions were made public. Feel the goose pimples ran up and down your spine as you view exhibitions of the prisoners and the violations they made resulting to their execution.
One special feature of the Bodmin Jail is the Paranormal Ghost Walks which is now on its third year. This is gaining popularity but this is not for the faint of heart. Ghost Walks could be arranged but you have make reservations or bookings.
Bodmin Jail offers tea, coffee or lunch in the bar. You can also bring home souvenirs of your visit from the souvenir shop. Bodmin Jail is ideal for a day out or for ghost walks which starts at 10 p.m. on arranged dates. Bodmin Jail is open 365 days a year. Free parking is available. Charge for the Jail Walk is £5.00 for adults, £3.00 for children, while it is £4.00 and £3.50 for seniors and disabled persons respectively.
